Craft & Provenance

From fragrant heartwood

Karnataka remains the historic heart of Indian sandalwood carving. Gudigar families in Mysore, Shimoga, Uttara Kannada and related centres transform aromatic heartwood into works of exceptional grain and detail. The material is sacred, scarce, and slow to yield.

A measured lineage

Sandalwood carving in Karnataka is measured in generations, not seasons. Tools remain simple; judgement remains everything. We work with ateliers whose practice respects both the wood and the iconography it carries — without reducing either to ornament for tourism.

Sourcing is careful and lawful. We do not invent certifications. We prefer transparency about origin, atelier, and the limits of supply over decorative claims.

Process

  1. 01

    Select

Heartwood is chosen for density, colour, and aroma. Only suitable stock enters the atelier.

  2. 02

    Carve

Forms are drawn and cut by hand. High and low relief, jali fretwork, and figurative sculpture follow established lineages.

  3. 03

    Finish

Surfaces are refined with progressive abrasives and a light oil polish — never heavy varnish that masks the wood.

  4. 04

    Present

Pieces travel under white-glove arrangement to residences and private spaces across the United Kingdom and Europe.
